Job: Animal Caretaker-Mouse Facility – Full Time

Salary: $15 – $17/hour

Job Summary:
The Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Embryology seeks an experienced, hardworking and reliable Animal Caretaker to join the department. This individual will perform daily maintenance and care for laboratory animals, including recognizing and reporting of apparent animal illnesses or abnormalities. They will utilize special techniques or husbandry practices beyond those required for routine colony management.

Principle Responsibilities include:
•Change dirty cages and provide food and water as required to maintain a clean and healthy environment for the animals
•Observe animals daily and prepare routing reports on dead and sick animals
•Observe and report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems
•Receive, identify and house selected animal species
•Assist in specialized monitoring and surveillance programs
•Prepare special diets in accordance with the principal investigator’s protocols, and ensure that the special diets are provided to the correct animals
•Assist in the operation of standardizing, conditioning, and breeding programs
•Administer commonly used and easily administered treatments or medication as directed by the Facility Manager
•Perform basic manipulations such as restraining animals, tagging and tailing, etc.
•Perform duties of other Animal Facility team members and other duties as assigned
•Awareness of the critical aspects of laboratory safety
•Assist in the training and supervision of new team members if requested by the Facility Manager

Interactions with Others:
Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Rodent Facility Manager. Work methods are stated explicitly and neither require nor permit deviation.

Qualifications:
•High School degree, equivalent or certification as animal technician
•Previous animal care experience required
•Detail oriented
•Reliable and hardworking
•Able to learn tasks with general instruction
•Able to understand and follow work and safety protocols
•Basic computer skills required

Physical Requirements:
•Routinely stoops and bends
•Routinely reaches and grasps with arms and hands above head
•Routinely stands for long periods
•Occasionally lifts, pushes and/or carries objects weighing up to 60 pounds
•May be exposed to some unpleasant conditions associated with handling animals and disagreeable animal odors
