The Division of Biosphere Sciences and Engineering (BSE) at the Carnegie Institution for Science, a non-profit world-class research institution, is seeking candidates for a Microscope Specialist position in the McFall-Ngai and Ruby labs, currently residing at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. This is a full-time position

Summary:

The labs study the association between a marine animal and its bacterial symbiont, a system whose study requires quality microscopy. The labs are seeking an individual with expertise to manage and maintain a Zeiss 900 confocal microscope, as well as other microscopy facilities in the labs. The responsibilities would include the maintenance of the equipment and the training of users of a Zeiss 900 confocal microscope, as well as the other microscopes.

Essential Requirements:

  • Deep knowledge of confocal microscopy for the imaging of biological structures
  • Hands-on experimental skills and experience with the acquisition of complex confocal images and with optical microscopy and other microscopy methods for the study of biological systems (e.g., bright-field, dark-field, fluorescence)
  • Practical expertise in image processing with commercial software, such as Imaris and ImageJ. Expertise in advanced image analytics
  • Excellent communication and writing skills; ability to work seamlessly with a multidisciplinary and diverse team; evidence of inventive work and innovative problem solving; excellent attention to detailĀ  and ability to maintain accurate records
  • Minimum education requirements: MS degree or equivalent in biological sciences

Preferred Experience:

  • At least 1-2 publications where confocal microscopy was a central component
  • Experience in scanning and transmission electron microscopy
  • Experience in confocal immunocytochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization
