Job: Postdoctoral Fellow — Carbon-Based Materials

The Earth and Planets Laboratory, Carnegie Institution for Science, seeks applications for a postdoctoral position focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel carbon-based materials. The position will focus on using high-pressure and high-temperature conditions to synthesize and characterize unique diamond-like crystalline carbon compounds with high strength/hardness and tunable electronic structures including semiconductors and superconductors. The successful candidate will work closely in a team comprised of experimental and computational physicists, chemists, and materials scientists. Minimum qualifications:  A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field is the requirement for this position.

Desired qualifications:  Expertise in solid-state physics and chemistry, including synthesis and characterization of electrical transport and magnetic properties, including superconductivity. Understanding of high-pressure techniques including laser-heated diamond anvil cells and/or large-volume press techniques is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work in both independent and collaborative group environments.

The appointment is intended for one year, with the possibility for up to two additional years pending progress and availability of funds. The position is expected to be available starting Fall 2020, and will remain open until filled.
